Low Pressure Stormrider Surf Guide says:
The bulk of Nicaragua’s coastline makes up the Mosquito Coast on the Caribbean side, where an extensive, shallow shelf drains what meager swells are available. Most of Nicaragua’s known surf spots are concentrated in the developed southwest corner where a narrow stretch of coastline separates Lake Nicaragua (the largest lake in Central America) from the Pacific. This huge body of water creates the perfect atmospheric conditions, causing winds to blow offshore for most of the year, around the San Juan Del Sur area. Surfing in Nicaragua started to grow a decade ago as the newly established democracy allowed the return of a bunch of self-exiled locals that had discovered surfing in Florida. They then started tapping into their own country’s wealth of excellent beachbreaks and left points.

Surfing in Nicaragua
Nicaragua is a surfer’s paradise. One of the most popular surfing spots in Nicaragua is Popoyo, located a few beaches from Morgan’s Rock where you will find various surf breaks ranging from hollow, A-frame beach break to super fun, classic point breaks, to critical outer reef breaks. These surf breaks benefit from Nicaragua’s permanent Santa Ana condition, and enjoy offshore winds over 300 days per year. Nicaragua’s Santa Ana phenomenon is a phenomenon whereby the dominant NE trades from the Caribbean are accelerated across Nicaragua’s narrow land mass by the absence of mountains in this southern region and by Lake Nicaragua, a massive inland lake approximately one-half as wide as the country. As the NE trades sweep across the narrow isthmus of the country towards the Pacific Ocean they blow straight into the approaching SW ground swells. The offshore winds groom these swells into clean hollow lines and almond-shaped barrels at the many points, reefs and beach breaks which bless Nicaragua’s Pacific coastline.
Surfers from all over the world travel to Nicaragua to ride the local waves. The waves are good, and the waters in some spots are teeming with marine wildlife such as dolphins. Surfers and visitors relish the laid back lifestyle of coastal towns like San Juan del Sur. Surf enthusiasts “in the know” have been traveling to Nicaragua for years. Though the country is becoming increasingly famous for its great waves and thriving surf culture, it is still relatively off the beaten track compared to other Central American countries. This means less crowded beaches and more waves for those who go now!

Morgan´s Rock - Nicaragua's Ecolodge
Barefoot luxury on a private tropical beach, stunning ocean-view bungalows, all within a 4,000-acre jungle define the Morgan's Rock experience. The ecolodge is a 15-bungalow hideaway on a mile-long picturesque sandy beach, frequented year-round by nesting sea turtles. Nearly half of the vast property is a government-designated reserve. The rest is low-impact agricultural land (a farm called El Aguacate) and sustainable tropical forestland (owned and managed by Desarrollo Ecoforestal, S.A.).
San Juan del Sur - Morgan's Rock Opened in 2004 by owners, the Poncon family, Morgan’s Rock is two hours by car from Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, on the Southern Pacific Coast of this ready to be discovered Central American country. The forested land and reserve hosts a variety of exotic animals like spider, howler and capuchin monkeys, deer, reptiles, and many native and migrant birds.
Morgan’s Rock is a one of a kind vacation destination. We are a luxury accommodation provider, but more than that we provide memories that last a lifetime. Many of our guests are return visitors. Our mission is to provide guests with ultimate relaxation, peace of mind, and an authentic local experience. Equally important to us is the preservation of Nicaragua’s vital ecosystems and wildlife, as well as cultural preservation and community involvement. Our contributions to conservation and community are highly visible. Guests contribute to our social and environmental mission simply by staying with us, allowing our continued support of community education and environmental conservation.
The sustainably constructed bungalows are nestled into the jungle, not far from the hacienda’s private beach. They are exquisite when lit up at night. Guests can relax on the beach and participate in numerous activities and off-site excursions. Lounge in a hammock under the shade of the palapa (thatched beach hut), rejuvenate with an early morning yoga session, hike to some of the best outlooks in the area, admire the fiery sunset over the Pacific with a glass of wine, or explore the vast property and its environs.
Beach Bungalows
Few lodges can offer harmony with nature the way Morgan’s Rock does. Residing in one of our fifteen sustainably constructed beachfront bungalows (nearly all of which boast a gorgeous view of the hacienda’s private beach) guests will find it Morgan's Rock bridgeimpossible not to relax. Drop your bags in your spacious bedroom upon arrival and you’ll have entered another world, intuitively switching gears to a slower, more natural tempo. Just outside you’ll spot howler monkeys, languorous sloths hanging from the trees, and a variety of vibrant tropical birds. Each bungalow includes a comfortable terrace where guests may enjoy a morning coffee, a glass of wine with the sunset, or a well deserved nap while soaking in stunning vistas and unparalleled wildlife. Our bungalows were designed to make guests feel at one with nature while creating minimal impact on the surrounding environment. Each three-sided bungalow is perched on a cliff 30-100 feet over the private beach and cove, just across a 50 yard jungle suspension bridge. Set into the treetops, each bungalow accommodates up to five people. Outside on the balcony is a special feature - a queen size day bed suspended by thick marine rope, reminding guests of the casual luxury they’ve come to experience and setting an appropriately relaxed pace for duration of their stay here at the hacienda.
Morgan's Rock rooms Adding an authentic touch to the rooms is the artwork of Nicaraguan artist Augusto Silva which features designs inspired by indigenous civilizations of Nicaragua, specifically the Tunu.
"The artistic inspiration of my ethnic influence is strongly represented in my paintings and even more so in my designs made from Tunu. With Tunu paintings, I represent the old indigenous civilizations from Nicaragua by exposing their clothing, arts and crafts, and homemade materials. The paintings’ underlying mission is to bring back those old customs and materials from previous civilizations that are scarce worldwide, yet still live within many of us and our cultures. By exposing my art, I try to speak to the viewers about the earth simplicity and nature’s way of calming its surrounding in such complex times.”
Serene and Sustainable
Your luxury accommodations were constructed and furnished by renowned sustainable wood and furniture company, Simplemente Madera. This Managua based company uses only certified sustainable wood in their simple, yet elegant designs. The company consciously utilizes pieces of lumber that would otherwise be wasted, such as wood with slight imperfections, giving their original items character and charm.
Soothing hardwood design provides a natural tone that instills a sense of stillness, simplicity, and calm. The beachside yoga pagoda is not far away, as are enticing lounge chairs and tropical straw huts awaiting you shore-side should you decide to leave your beautiful accommodations and explore. You’ll be happy to know you can return at the end of a long, enjoyable day to a hot shower (solar powered and always reliable), a pleasant ambience, and the soothing rhythm of waves rolling in to shore, sure to lure you into sweet dreams.

Along the way, as you relax and enjoy the impressive scenery you may spot spider monkeys, colorful toucans, and white-faced monkeys curiously peering back at you. On this tour we’ll visit the property’s sustainable “tree plantation,” where we plant and harvest trees for commercial use to lessen the strain on Nicaragua’s valuable forests (hyperlink to “Conservation efforts”). We also visit the organic farm, with its lively chickens and gentle holstein cows, and on to the horse stables.
Sunset Tour
Take a short hike to the premier vantage point for which to view the stunning sunset as it disappears beyond the Pacific. This easy and enjoyable walking tour begins at our private beach and leads to a relaxed, romantic setting upon a hill overlooking the ocean. A perfect, breathtaking conclusion to any day here at the hacienda.
Breakfast at the Farm
Our most requested tour! Collect eggs from the chicken coup, milk the cows, and pound corn to make fresh, homemade tortillas. The hard yet enjoyable work culminates in a family style Nicaraguan breakfast down at our farm house. Breakfast is a hearty affair of gallo pinto (Nicaraguan rice and beans), eggs, milk, hot coffee and freshly pressed juice and of course those delicious handmade corn tortillas that you’ve now learned how to prepare. What better way to start your day than with a fulfilling, organic breakfast which you’ve helped to create from scratch. Truly a “farm to table” experience!

Enjoy an unfogettable day on the water with this exciting tour! Reel in red snapper, with its distinc pink hue, perhaps to be had for dinner later. Horseback Riding
Let our horses Pirata, Lucero, Chavalo, and Rosillo lead you through the tropical dry forest around the hacienda. As you trot through virgin forest you’ll spot local inhabitants such as playful monkeys, lazy sloths and exotic tropical birds in their natural habitat. On this guided trek you’ll emerge out of the forest unto a coastal hill that offers the ultimate overhead view of the entire property and beyond to San Juan del Sur. End the tour with a brilliant ride on the hacienda’s secluded beach. Gallop across a mile long stretch of white sand, splashing through the surf for an unforgettable finale to a very special day. Our horses are well cared for, loving creatures. They enjoy frequent treks through the vast property and plenty of natural space to roam and relax – much like their riders!
Culinary Delights at Morgan’s Rock
Guests are in for a treat when they dine in at the hacienda - whether at our lovely restaurant overlooking the ocean, or over a hearty breakfast of handmade tortillas and gallopinto (rice and beans) down at the farmhouse.
Morgan's Rock farmer Morgan's Rock shrimp Morgan's Rock delicious food
Thanks to a large working farm with cows, chickens, fruit and vegetable gardens, and even a sustainable shrimp farm, Morgan’s Rock sources roughly 60% of its food products from farming activities that take place right on the premises. Guests are welcome to visit our organic farm, where they can lend a hand collecting eggs or milking the cows, or simply kick back and enjoy a rustic breakfast cooked on the hearth by the lovely Doña Candida. Participants in this activity will even learn how to make delicious homemade tortillas!
Diners at our comfortable outdoor restaurant and bar can enjoy a variety of special Nicaraguan dishes as well as an array of international flavors. The restaurant is located on a shady platform overlooking the pool, surrounded by forest, and beyond it the private beach and cove. Guests are invited to sit back with a glass of wine, perhaps some freshly caught seafood, and of course the complimentary stunning sunsets which are a nightly treat.
The restaurant menu features authentic Nicaraguan fare as well as dishes from Central and South America, France, and Asia. Local ingredients are used whenever possible. Some of the farm’s bounty which finds its way into our restaurant includes tropical fruits, dairy products, meat, and poultry. Seafood is caught locally by traditional fishing methods, or sourced from the nearby Pacific Ocean. Vegetarian and special-diet requests can be accommodated with prior notice. A child’s menu features tasty kid-friendly options.
For those wishing to personalize their dining experience, private breakfasts, picnic lunches and romantic dinners can be arranged at a number of secluded spots on the beach or around the lodge.
The Food of Nicaragua - "La Comida Nica"
On an optional excursion to nearby historic towns, visitors can meander along the vibrant colonial streets. They can shop at the bustling outdoor markets while sampling local fruits, vegetables, beans, and more while mingling with the locals. In historic Granada, be sure to try the famous nacatamales – vegetable or meat filled tamales steamed in banana leaves. On excursions, visitors may leisurely peruse the food stalls for an authentic taste of what this part of the Nicaraguan coast has to offer.
Guests who chose to visit a market in town will get a real taste of the Nicaraguan lifestyle, typical foodstuffs, and tempo. What better way to explore a culture than to learn how the locals eat? At the market or in a Nicaraguan restaurant you may come across local specialties such as:
- Gallo Pinto – A staple in Nicaragua, gallo pinto is made with red beans and rice, cooked separately and fried together. It is eaten for breakfast or as an accompaniment to any meal.
- Vigarón – A plantain leaf serves as a dish for this delightful salad made with boiled yucca, chicharrón (crunchy fried pork rind) and cabbage salad– a specialty of Granada.
- Nacatamal - Nacatamal can be enjoyed as a filling street snack, and is a specialty of Granada on the Caribbean coast. In the home it is typically prepared for holidays or special celebrations. Thenacatamal consists of cornmeal dough, meat, rice, and various vegetables. The filling is wrapped in a plantain leaf and steamed for hours.
- Quesillo – A delicious and readily available street snack. A fresh tortilla is stuffed with mild Nicaraguan cheese, topped with onions, vinegar, and a dollop of fresh cream.
- Rondon – This hearty stew takes hours to prepare and incorporates surprising ingredients. The basic components are fresh fish (sometimes red meat or pork), peppers, fruits and vegetables such as banana, cassava and onion, and coconut milk. Rondon is a specialty of Bluefields on the Caribbean coast.
- Indijo Viejo – This delicious stew is made with shredded meat (beef or chicken), bitter oranges, corn flour, vegetables, and achiote. The achiote imparts an enticing reddish-orange hue.
- Tajadas – Tajadas are deep fried plantain chips. They are available seemingly around every corner in Nicaragua, and commonly find their way onto plates as an accompaniment to the main meal, in addition to, or in lieu of rice.
Some delicious sweets that are not to be missed include:
- Buñuelos de Yuca - Shredded yucca root is combined with salty Nicaraguan cheese and eggs to make this mouthwatering dessert. The yucca batter is deep fried and the fritters are soaked in a sweet, spice infused syrup.
- Pastel de Tres Leches – A decadently moist and rich sponge cake, so named for the three types of milk used - evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and whole milk. Fresh out of the oven, the warm cake is bathed in sweet, creamy syrup made of these “tres leches.”
- Arroz con Leche – sweet rice pudding made with milk, sugar, and flavored with cinnamon sticks
- Pío Quinto – Velvety rum cake is topped with an egg custard and a dusting of cinnamon to make this spectacular dessert. Sometimes raisins are also used, and often a pool of rum syrup awaits the happy eater at the bottom of the dish. Try it with Nicaragua’s famous rum, Flor de Caña!
Popular drinks range from the standard Nicaraguan coffee, with or without milk, to thirst-quenching tropical fruit juices and sweet horchata made with rice and cinnamon, to options for those with a more adventurous palate such as pitahaya (dragon fruit beverage), pozol and chicha (fermented corn drinks) and pinolillo (cocoa and cornmeal beverage).
Corn is a main staple in “la comida Nica” (Nicaraguan cuisine) across the country, however there are some regional differences. For example on the Caribbean coast one will find more use of coconut milk, which is sometimes added to the national staple dish gallopinto. Of course, seafood is featured on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.
Colorful fruits and street-side treats will entice you as you browse under the hot sun. Some tasty typical food products that shoppers may encounter at the market include juicy mangoes, melons, jocote, pipian (squash-like fruit similar to pumpkin), papaya, tamarind, fresh avocado, yucca, and bananas. Common spices sold fresh or dried in the markets include oregano, cilantro and achiote (also known as annatto; sold as seeds or ground into a powder). Street food is abundant and diverse. Some popular items include freshly roasted corn on the cob and fried plantains. In the morning you can fill up on a traditional Nicaraguan breakfast with eggs, gallopinto and fresh corn tortillas, or try piping hot plantain filled with cheese and eggs! Delicious!

If due payments are not made or not made in full and the Traveller/Group leader does not pay after a reminder with a final due date, LUEX or the Service provider are able to withdraw from the particular agreement, unless LUEX or the Service provider is already responsible for a significant flaw, failing or shortcoming at this time. If the Traveller is responsible for the cancellation, LUEX or the Service provider can demand compensation in accordance with the agreed fixed rates for compensation. If nothing else has been stipulated within the offer/travel confirmation, the fixed rate in the event of the Traveller cancelling more than 30 days prior to departure is 25% of the price of the tour. The Traveller/Group leader is entitled to provide evidence of lower costs or costs that did not eventuate, while LUEX is free to calculate and demonstrate substantially higher costs.
LUEX assumes no currency risks. In order to minimise currency risks, LUEX shall exchange the travel payments received into the target currency of the country of the respective Service provider as soon as possible after receipt of payment. In the event of major currency fluctuations, the Traveller/Group leader shall indemnify LUEX against any proven currency exchange losses. Reimbursements shall be made solely by means of bank transfers in the currency of the recipient. Bank fees and charges shall be borne by the Traveller/Group leader.
If the Traveller/Group leader pays by bank transfer, LUEX can only facilitate a smooth booking process if the Traveller/Group leader uses the designated booking ID in the purpose field of the bank transfer which is specified in the request for payment. Otherwise LUEX may not be able to assign the payment to the correct booking. A failure to do that correctly can result in the cancellation of a trip in the worst-case scenario.
If the Traveller wishes to book not as a private individual, but as a business traveller acting on instructions or as a legal representative, this must be noted already during the booking process and cannot be subsequently altered. This can have taxation consequences and should therefore be carefully considered.
The customer shall receive a payment receipt in the form of a booking confirmation from LUEX showing the total price, either paid or to be paid to the Service provider.
6. Alterations, cancellations, reimbursements
In the event that a confirmed booking is modified or cancelled, LUEX is to be contacted as quickly as possible in this matter such that a possible solution can be sought in consultation with the Traveller/Group leader. Should there be a modification or cancellation by LUEX / the Service provider, LUEX shall also contact the Traveller/Group leader as soon as possible and seek a possible solution.
LUEX notes explicitly that as an intermediary LUEX cannot assume responsibility for the performance of the Service provider. In particular, LUEX offers individual travel-related products and services to exotic destinations. 7. Complaints and ratings
Should the Traveller be dissatisfied with an aspect of the travel-related product or service received in a particular case and wish to submit a complaint, they are to approach the Service provider or their representative directly at the location during their current stay so that this person can attempt to solve the problem. The Service provider should then respond to the correspondence according to the applicable laws and regulations. Receipt should be confirmed in 14 days and a full response received within 28 days. If this is not the case, an explanation for the delay should be received from the Service provider.
